About

This low-impact nature makes it an attractive option for people of all ages and fitness levels. This is a question that plagues both competitive athletes and recreational swimmers alike.
During sleep, the body repairs itself and produces hormones. Sleep is crucial for hormone regulation, including testosterone. Regular testosterone testing is generally recommended for athletes experiencing symptoms of low testosterone, or those engaging in very high-volume, high-intensity training. Swimming, by helping to reduce body fat, can indirectly contribute to improved testosterone production. Does age play a role in how swimming affects testosterone? Distance swimming, on the other hand, is more likely to require careful management of nutrition and recovery to prevent potential suppression.
But the research says little about testosterone production. The idea is that cold showers lower the scrotal temperature, allowing the testicles to produce a maximum amount of sperm and testosterone. Most of the research around temperature and testosterone has to do with the testicles and scrotum. Let’s explore the evidence for each of the common claims about cold showers and your body.

It involves the use of testosterone to restore hormone levels in men who have low testosterone levels, also known as hypogonadism. Aiming for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night is essential for maintaining healthy testosterone levels. Should swimmers get their testosterone levels checked regularly? Overtraining and inadequate nutrition can lead to hormonal imbalances in female swimmers as well, potentially affecting their menstrual cycle and bone health.
Cristina Villanueva, an investigator at CREAL, thinks the study’s findings seem plausible in the context of limited evidence from other studies. The study seems well conducted, despite its limitations, says Mark Nieuwenhuijsen, a research professor at the Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL). They can’t definitively say that the hormone reductions observed will cause reproductive harm, but they conclude that the potential for reproductive problems such as reduced sperm production is plausible. These were primarily backyard pools that study coauthor Alfred Bernard, a professor of toxicology at Catholic University of Louvain, says tend to be less prone than public pools to have elevated concentrations of urine and other organic matter. The study population consisted of 199 primarily white boys aged years who swam regularly in indoor and/or outdoor chlorinated pools, and 162 similar boys who swam most frequently in an indoor pool disinfected with copper–silver ionization (but also swam at times in indoor or outdoor chlorinated pools).
Chronic low testosterone, or hypogonadism, can lead to fatigue, decreased muscle mass, weight gain, and other health issues. Beyond physical fitness, swimming is known for its mental health benefits, promoting relaxation and reducing stress. Understanding the Role of Testosterone in Muscle Recovery When it comes to muscle recovery and overall health, testosterone plays a crucial role in men....
The subjects maintained their normal dietary habits, which generally included a light breakfast, fruit juice and/or caffeine (e.g., coffee) prior to training. Given the ecological design and fixed training plan, it was not possible to increase rest periods (e.g., 2 days or more) prior to data collection, apart from early-morning testing on Mondays at T1, T2, and T3. Next, the participant provided a pre-session (or baseline) saliva sample that was collected by passive drool into a pre-labelled 5 mL polypropylene tube. Data were collected at the training venue before and/or after the early-morning pool session. Bottom plot depicts the daily-averaged rating of perceived exertion (RPE) across the AM and PM swim training sessions.
Using a commercial protein assay kit (Bio-Rad Labs, Hercules, CA, USA), aliquots (20 μL) of the diluted testicular and semen samples were mixed with 980 μL of distilled water and then, 200 μL Bradford reagent was added to each sample. A low HBA score suggests a low proportion of mature sperm, while a higher HBA score shows the normal presence of healthy, mature sperm. Each swimming training session lasted for 25 min, and all training sessions were performed in the mornings. During the study, all efforts were made to minimize the stress factors for the animals.
